Jones County is fortunate to have the presence of a world class educational institution right in our own backyard. The Jones Regional Education Center (JREC), located just off Business 151 in the Welter Commercial Park in Monticello, is our local branch of Kirkwood Community College headquartered in Cedar Rapids. The Center offers opportunities for workforce development and education right in Jones County. Beyond the traditional college credit and continuing education classes, JREC partners with high schools in the region to allow students to focus their studies on specific career academies targeted at Welding, Machining, STEM fields, as well as, four year college preparation. In addition, JREC works diligently works with Jones County Economic Development and local industry to support specific training wants and needs designing programs around specific skill sets as needed.
Through their Skills Advantage program, Kirkwood is responsive to the needs of area businesses. They provide a array of assessment tools for employers including the National Career Readiness Certificate, ACT WorkKeys Assessments, Job Profiling/Analysis and Personal Skills Assessments.
Kirkwood Training and Outreach Services administers the State of Iowa New Jobs Training program (260 E) and the Iowa Jobs Training Program (260 F). The 260 E program can provide funding for training and employee development for businesses that are adding new jobs.
